Bibliography
My first intention was to compile a heraldic bibliography relating to Canada and to the countries that are viewed as its founding nations, namely England, Scotland, Ireland and France: precisely those that are represented in Canada’s coat of arms. I also wanted to include the United States because Americans, like Canadians, share a similar situation with respect to the European origins of their heraldry. Also waves of Loyalists migrated to Canada during and after the American Revolutionary War leading to the creation of the province of Ontario. Inversely, between 1840 and 1930, it is estimated that over 900,000 French Canadians immigrated to the United States. Consequently, millions of Americans are of French origin and their search for ancestral arms present the same complexities as for Canadians of French descent. As a number of bibliographies covering the heraldry of Europe and the United States began appearing on the Internet, it became clear that a more practical approach was to concentrate on Canadian works that are relevant to the chapters of my guide to heraldry. To this, I added a section (1.3) for sites with a predominantly Canadian content. Since the European works are essential for tracing ancestral arms, I have included bibliographic publications that list such works as well as several sites where many can be found (section 2). A third part complements the guide’s Appendix III which is entitled “Identifying arms from various countries” (https://heraldicscienceheraldique.com/appendix-iii-identifying-arms-from-various-countries.html). Web links accompany older works that are now available online. All the sites appearing with this bibliography were consulted on 23 July 2020.
